Leopoldo López is a Venezuelan political leader and activist. He founded the Voluntad Popular political party and was widely seen as a major leader of the opposition movement. On February 18, 2014, he was arrested on a variety of baseless charges, and on September 10, 2015, he was convicted and sentenced to 13 years and 9 months in prison. Leopoldo was released from house arrest on April 30, 2019, during the 2019 Venezuela uprising. During his detention, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that his detention was arbitrary and in violation of international law and Amnesty International designated him as a prisoner of conscience. Leopoldo has received several international awards for his fight for democracy and freedom in Venezuela.
