Sultana Khaya is a human rights defender and a well-known Sahrawi activist. On November 19, 2020, Sultana was placed under de facto house arrest when she was forced inside her family’s home by the Moroccan police and military, acting without a warrant or criminal charges filed against her. While under house arrest, Sultana was repeatedly subjected to torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment by Moroccan authorities. On May 30, 2022, she successfully escaped to Spain.
